Cartographic Designer and GIS Specialist - Pro Bono
World Elections Commission of the Provisional World Government seeks dedicated volunteers as cartographers and GIS specialists to create two high-precision maps which will be used in official government works.
Responsibilities:
Map 1: World Territorial Boundaries Map
- Create a detailed territorial-type boundaries map (focus: land divisions, disputed zones, coastlines).
- Apply specific conditions provided by the commission (e.g., highlighting territorial waters, custom labeling protocols).
Map 2: Political Boundaries & Population Density Map
- Design a political boundaries map integrating:
- World countries’ borders (standardized geopolitical lines).
- Global population density data (using datasets like EU or UN Population Division) to visualize density gradients (e.g., choropleth/heatmap overlay).
- Ensure alignment with the commission’s visual guidelines (colors, legends, scales).
Required Skills:
- Technical Proficiency:
- Expert use of GIS software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS).
- Experience processing geopolitical boundary data (e.g., Natural Earth, OSM) and population datasets.
- Ability to handle vector/raster data and projection systems.
- Cartography Best Practices:
- Knowledge of territorial vs. political boundary distinctions.
- Experience designing publication-ready static maps.
- Attention to Detail:
- Adherence to strict government specifications for borders, labels, and metadata.
